Originally developed as a veterinary drug to help improve appetite and lean muscle mass in racehorses, Equipoise was marketed as Boldenone and approved for human consumption during the 60sby the Food and Drug Administration. It is still used in some horse breeders in North America, especially in the West. This has been linked to an increased incidence of weight gain in racehorses, legal consequences for using anabolic steroids. The animal rights organization, PETA, is on the side of equipoise opponents, claiming the horse is a dangerous 'drug' which can cause severe kidney damage. The latest version of Equipoise, named Equipoise XL and priced at $39, was released in November 2015, although it remains on Schedule 1, legal consequences for using anabolic steroids. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is responsible for making its approval decisions. During their latest review of the product, the DEA stated that there is limited scientific evidence to support the use of Equipoise in horse disease management, legal consequences for using anabolic steroids.
